i want more volumizing than lengthening.
(my eyelashes are naturally long, any longer would look creepy.)
i also want lash separation.
i want the "fake eyelash" effect, like so:

and any tips on applying?
is an eyelash curler worth it?
and please dont recommend brands like Loreal. Nothing personal, but i only like their hair products.
also i dont want to use Maybelline Great Lash (green lid, pink tube). it never worked for me.
Also i would rather not use like XL or XXL or XXXL or whatever they are. i hear these are very clumpy.
plus i want to spend under 20 bucks.

you sound really fussy! yes, a lash curler is definitely worth it! a heated one is even better, but you can do this on the cheap by heating a metal curler with a hairdryer. have you tried actually using fake lashes!? allure [i think] make some amazing fakes that last 3 weeks, and come in lots of natural shades. as for maybelline great lash, its the best thing out there! i've tried so many different brands, but that is my favorite!

covergirl volume exact. it curls and adds a ton of volume.

The ones I've found are Almay One-coat curling and Loreal Architect. Sorry about mentioning Loreal, but it is different from their usual mascaras.

If you're willing to spend some bucks, Dior's Diorshow mascara is $23. It is worth every single penny, I promise. You can buy it at Sephora or at www.sephora.com. But if you don't want to spend up, then I recommend Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara. I think it's a lot like Diorshow Mascara, and it runs around $10. Look it up on www.maxfactor.com for stores. I think they sell it at WalMart also. Both of these are great for a fake eyelash look. Make sure to "wiggle" the mascara wand back and forth at the roots of your eyelashes so that they look thicker.
As for an eyelash curler...I own one, but I really don't need it unless I want a certain look or one of my eyelashes is acting funky. Maybe just get one by Revlon, which is good, but the best one is Shu Uemura's eyelash curler. It's about $15 and you can get that at www.sephora.com.

The Best Volumizing Mascara?
the girls lashes in the picture are fake...and i believe she is either a cover girl or l'oreal model
I'm sorry dear but if you want to spend under 20 bucks your best bet is going to be a drug store brand
and I hate to say but from what you described we seem to have similar eyelashes and the best mascara I've ever used is L'oreal Voluminous...just saying
an eyelash curler is always worth it as is an eyelash comb
curl your lashes
start at the base and do a side to side motion all the way to the tip
then comb them to the neatness and direction you want
put on as many coats as you prefer and comb in between each coat
hope i helped

Maybelline Volume Express works pretty good for me. I have Asian eyes so I like a LOT of volume!

Clinique High Impact is good. Also Loreal Voluminous is great. Loreal is made by the same company that makes Lancome, so its good stuff, and I dont know what you have against it...
As for applying it, get as close to the base of your lashes as possible and wiggle the wand up your lashes. Then wiggle some more onto the base of your lashes. Two coats usually works for me.

First of all, you've gotta know that the girl in the picture IS wearing false eyelashes on both her top and bottom lashline. But for volume I'd recommend either something by Lancome (high end) or Volume Flash (Rimmel London) or my personal FAV: Maybelline Volum' Express Turbo Boost
Btw, XXL isn't all that clumpy, you've gotta put it on the right way.
